A few years back, a young man who used to help me with deliveries at SALE-RITE ENTERPRISE told me something that stayed with me. He said, "Boss, I can fix any laptop you bring me, but I don't know how to tell my father I'm sorry." I thought about that for a long time. Here was someone skilled, hardworking, able to solve complicated technical problems — yet stuck on something far more basic: how to repair a relationship with words.

That conversation is part of why this guide exists.

We spend years learning how to read, write, calculate, and eventually how to do a job well. Few of us are ever taught, in any deliberate way, how to keep a promise under pressure, how to listen when we'd rather talk, how to disagree without destroying the relationship, or how to say no without guilt eating us alive. We pick these things up by accident — watching our parents, surviving bad friendships, learning the hard way at work. Some of us pick up good habits. Many of us pick up habits that quietly damage the people closest to us.

This guide is my attempt to put into plain words what I have learned — from running a business in Lusaka, from raising a family, from watching friendships survive decades and others collapse in a single afternoon, and from my own mistakes, which have been plenty.
