Who it’s for

Shop owners, traders, makers and beginners who want to sell physical or digital products online.

Preview

A few years ago, I watched a trader at Soweto Market in Lusaka pack up her tomatoes and vegetables at the end of a long, hot day, tired and with barely enough profit to show for it. A few stalls down, a young woman selling the same vegetables — but also posting photos on WhatsApp Status and taking orders from customers in Kabulonga and Roma who didn't want to fight traffic or queue at the market — was sold out by 2pm. Same product. Same market. Completely different results.

That difference is not luck. It is not about having a big shop, a lot of capital, or a university degree in marketing. It is about understanding how people buy today, and setting up a simple, honest system to meet them where they already are — on their phones, scrolling WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, looking for something to buy before they even leave the house.

This book exists because too many good businesses in Zambia and across Africa are still invisible online, while their customers have already moved there. You might be a shop owner on Cairo Road who knows your products well but has never posted a single item for sale online. You might be a tailor in Kitwe, a jewellery maker in Ndola, a baker in Chelstone, or someone selling second-hand clothes (salaula) who has only ever sold face-to-face. Or you might not be selling anything yet — you have an idea, some capital saved from your salary or chilimba group, and you want to start the right way instead of guessing and losing money.

Whoever you are, this book was written for you.
