I want to tell you about two traders I have known over the years at Soweto Market in Lusaka.
The first one, let's call him Mulenga, started the year with fire. He woke up early, restocked twice a week, kept a notebook of his sales, and told everyone who would listen that this was the year he would move from a market stall to his own shop. By March, the notebook had stopped. By June, he was back to buying stock only when he ran completely dry, selling at whatever price the day gave him, and blaming "the economy" for why business was slow.
The second one, let's call her Mutinta, started quietly. No big announcement. She simply decided she would record every sale, every evening, for five minutes, no matter how tired she was. She didn't restock twice a week like Mulenga — she restocked once, consistently, every Monday. Nothing about her first month looked impressive. But eighteen months later, she had opened a second stall. Two years after that, a small shop in town.
The difference between Mulenga and Mutinta was never talent, luck, or even hard work in the way we usually think of it. Mulenga worked hard in bursts. Mutinta worked steadily. The difference was discipline — and more precisely, consistency.
This is a book about that difference, and it is written because I believe most people who feel like they are "failing" are not actually lazy, weak, or lacking ambition. They are simply relying on the wrong fuel. They are waiting to feel motivated before they act, and motivation, by its nature, does not show up every day. Discipline does not wait for a feeling. It is a system
